February 2006: Still on the Oregon Coast, Kay Goes to VA25 February 2006: Days and nights are long when living with a loved one who is waiting for a medical miracle and one who is waiting to die. Let me die quickly while I'm having fun because I don't wish to linger in suffering. On a brighter note, I saw some sunshine yellow crocuses today. Spring is just round the corner ... 22 February 2006: Woke-up to a winter wonderland. An overnight snow blanketed the area in soft white powder. The afternoon sun is melting it away. 21 February 2006: I saw my first spring pink hyacinths, yellow daffodils, and purple crocuses today. The sun set behind the Shenandoah Mountains last night as my Dad and I drove back to the farm from UVA Medical Center and it rose this morning as we drove back there to get some good news: the cancer is localized in a tumor in his esophagus which will be removed next week. He has a 95% chance of being cancer-free and getting back to cutting grass, planting his garden, and taking care of my Mom. Both the beautiful sunset and sunrise were photo-ops that I had to pass-up because I was driving. Perhaps they were Mother Nature's way of smiling. 16 February 2006: My plane trip across country was on time with no delays; I enjoyed two seats on all three legs of my journey; and, my luggage arrived at my destination. Mother Nature has been kind to this area this winter. Although there was a big snowfall over the weekend, when I drove my Dad to UVA in Charlottesville, VA, I saw yellow forsythia blooms and weeping willows turning early spring green. Temperatures climbed toward 70 degrees today, but cold Canadian air may be bringing an ice storm on Monday. Mother Nature can be quite fickle this time of year. 10 February 2006: The clouds have returned bringing cooler temperatures and us inside. We did take a walk to the beach while the sun was still shining and I took several photos of a playful CA sea lion who was fishing for salmon for his lunch. More family illness is taking me back to VA on Monday. Tom will stay here on the West Coast in the RV with the cats, for now. 09 February 2006: The wind is coming from the Chetco River and the temperatures are in the 70's this morning. These Chetco Winds create a tropical-like condition which gives this area its nickname of "Oregon's Banana Belt." Because of these mild temperatures, this is also the land of Easter lilies where 90% of the lily bulbs in the world are grown. Learn more about our home-of-record, Brookings, Oregon. View a slideshow of some scenic images of Curry County. 08 February 2006: Sunshine and warm temperatures continue. Tom and I went hiking on one of the trails looking for mushrooms, alas, I found few. Perhaps the winter storms have kept them beaten down below ground and this week of sunshine will draw them out. I'm headed to the beach to look for more starfish and anemones this afternoon with my small camera. My shoulder is aching with bursitis so I can't carry the big ones for awhile. Bummer. 04 February 2006: Noisy night, but the storm blew over and the sun is shining! 03 February 2006: Batton down the hatches! A winter storm is headed our way with high wind and wave warnings. Sunday was predicted to be sunny and 62, but now the high temperature is predicted to be 48 with some sun. We'll shut down the satellite dish until this storm blows over... 01 February 2006: The best homemade fudge ever is made just across the street at the Smuggler's Cove Gift Shop. Happy birthday this month to my nephew Phil, Jr. It continues to rain and we're getting tired of it! Need sunshine. I may be flying back to VA soon to visit my parents, so we're staying here until we know for sure, then we'll head south and east. Enjoyed viewing The March of the Penguins, quite a love story. Did not enjoy viewing Crash, quite a depressing portrayal of prejudices in our American society. I liked The Interpreter, however, it is very slow in the beginning and picks up pace only when Sean Penn really gets involved in the story. Rainy days are good for viewing videos! I am disappointed that Cinderella Man did not get more nominations for awards. It had both good acting and a good story based on the real life of boxer James J. Braddock. Perhaps actor Russell Crowe should control his temper when he's in the US... And, Mr. & Mrs. Smith was fun to watch. Even if the story was just too impossible to allow me to suspend my disbelief and the acting was nothing to brag about, the follow-up love story between its co-stars, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is fun to follow, for me anyway, especially because of their shared love of kids. |
