January 2006: Back in Brookings, Oregon29 January 2006: I've been using Photoshop to create various forms of photo galleries to view the featured photos of 2005. None of these photo galleries works as well as going to Smugmug.com to see the featured photos there in their galleries. So, I'll let Smugmug provide a variety of ways to view the photos including a slideshow. 27 January 2006: The rains have returned! Tom and I have been making small efforts to lighten our load in the RV to prepare for hitting the road in March. He also continues to try to repair our two leaks in the RV. The rains have me thinking about mushrooms so I have been editing some photos of mushrooms from last year and I bought a book to help me identify them, All That the Rain Promises and More by David Arora. On our next sunny day, we'll look for more mushrooms to photograph. Maybe I'll learn enough about identifying them to know the difference between edible and poisonous 'shrooms. I don't eat mushrooms, but Tom does. 25 January 2006: We've enjoyed a few sunny, warm days. Tom and I spent over two hours on McVay Beach yesterday. I photographed starfish and sea anemones. Rain is back today, so I had no chance to photograph mushrooms. Maybe next week ... 22 January 2006: SUN! A blue, cloudless sky brightened our spirits. Tom and I walked to the beach by the harbor and saw five of the colony cats being cared for there by the local Humane Society and the fishermen in the harbor. The cats were sunning on the breaker rocks. They help keep the rodent population in the harbor under control. We also saw a few CA sea lions swimming about. Some of the trees are budding here where winter is a short season of about two months. I uploaded the new page format, with Tom's help, and will work on the slideshow this evening after the sun sets. 20 January 2006: More rain and the lichens are liking it! I'm working on creating a slideshow of featured photos. 15 January 2006: Woke-up with sun in my face and it felt very good. It's still a bit cold and wet to forage for mushrooms to photograph. So, I'm making veggie soup, doing laundry, and cleaning-up a bit. We enjoyed meeting Jeanine's new man, Mike, for dinner last night, and I always enjoy chatting with her. Tom and I have a new travel plan. I'll fly back to VA to take care of Mom as needed in February, then return here to Southern OR. Then we'll head south and travel the Rocky Mountains from New Mexico north to Banff, Canada, good weather permitting. This is a trip that Tom has always wanted to take and we're just not ready to be "house-poor" yet. We're delaying our plans for building our "techie-cave" until 2007. 14 January 2006: Happy birthdays this month to my Dad, niece Melanie, and great-niece Kendall Rosie! Rain, rain go away ... Still raining here in Southern OR. We have had two "sun breaks" since we returned on January 4. Harry Cat is disappointed. Now that his servants are home, he can go out during the day, but it's not fun hunting in the rain. He's complaining often asking us to make the sun shine. If only we could! We're just plain lazy, still not feeling well. Tom's not coughing as much and I'm OK; we just don't have much energy. Need some sunshine... It was sunny and 83 F. in Ft. Myers, FL yesterday. Inviting. 11 January 2006: We had a "sun break" today with temperatures reaching 60 F. Tom's medication for his coughing is making him sleepy, so I ventured out in Ruby to take some photos. It's mid-January, but the daffodils, calalilies, and Indian paintbrush are blooming. We have short winters here, perhaps only two months or so from mid-November through mid-January. Soon, the mushrooms will be popping up with all of this rain! I took some photos of the driftwood along the beaches. Much driftwood is thrown up onto the beaches by the winter storms, but other storms soon take it back to sea. I am erroneously putting © 2005 on some of my new photos. Must remember that it is now 2006! 10 January 2006: We drove from Brookings, OR to Crescent City, CA to get Tom's continuing cough checked out. He will be taking two medications to clear it up. The winter rains have turned everything green, greener, greenest! I have never seen so much driftwood piled up along the beach near the Crescent City harbor. More rain today and more to come ... 08 January 2006: We've spent much of our time back home so far petting Harry and Sadie and catching up on our "cop" shows in between naps necessary for adjusting to jet lag. We're definitely addicted to CSI, Law & Order, DaVinci's Inquest, Bones, Numbers, Wanted, Cold Case, etc. Can't get enough of those criminal problems to solve in about 45 minutes! Most of our travel stuff has been sorted and some of it has even been put away. Now I have loads and loads of dirty laundry to wash. We enjoyed a very sunny, mildly warm afternoon after days and days of rain so we took a long walk. Winter storms have washed up lots of driftwood on the beach. Folks are sifting through it looking for pieces to carve or to burn. 04 January 2006: Tom says he will never fly again ... until the next time. Although the flights have been safe and smooth, they were LOOONG and crowded with every seat occupied. As usual, the food was terrible, but the tea did not taste like coffee on the Lufthansa flight. On our return flight we had no audio, no sound to muffle the noise of the engine and crying kids and no sound track to the movies. Even worse, Tom did not bring a book and we did not have time to stop to buy one. So, Tom was extremely bored during this 10.5-hour flight. The time flew by for me while I read Desert Flower, a gift from Marlies. We're waiting for our connecting flight to Crescent City from San Franciso and our bodies tell us that it is about 3 AM! We're tired. We are both looking forward to sleeping in our own bed with our two furry feline friends, Harry and Sadie. The sun is shining here in San Francisco and the warm temperatures feel great after our cold, white Christmas in Germany. 03 January 2006: We have spent our last few days here in Germany resting and driving to and from nearby small villages. Tom enjoyed currywurst with Henning today for lunch. Tonight, we will say farewell to our German friends until we can visit again. We are both a little sad to be leaving this place where I feel so at home, but back to our cats and families we go... |
