November 2006: VA, Then South to Florida for the Winter30 November 2006: We did take a horse-drawn carriage ride around Old Town Charleston SC in a warm drizzle. Our carriage was pulled by Simon who used to pull wagons loaded with logs. Now, he pulls humans in a carriage and wants to gallop and run with his light load. His jerks along with a gray sky did not make for any good photo-ops today. I'd like to return to this area to photograph Spanish moss on old oak trees, water birds, the intricate iron work on the historic mansions, and some of the festive alleys between the houses.
Last night, we wanted to enjoy the warm breeze so we left the windows open and the fans running. Big mistake. We both woke up sweating with our sinuses stopped up. Tom turned on the A/C to dehumidify the RV so we could breathe. I took a Benadryl for a sinus headache mid-day and slept the afternoon away. This evening we ventured out to the local barbecue place, Bessingers, not as good as Famous Dave's BBQ. 29 November 2006: After three days of towing, we've landed in Charleston SC. The only traffic problems we had were around Charlotte NC where there were just too many cars for too few roads. As we were eating our first seafood meal here, it was quite odd hearing Christmas carols while looking at palm trees in sunny 80-degree weather. Along the way, I saw two white egrets and a great heron in wetlands along the highways. There are some small herons running around the campground. The house on this campground is surrounded by old oak trees with Spanish moss. Tomorrow, we'll do a recon of the area. I'd like to take a carriage ride around the Old Town on Friday and a ferry out to Bull Island on Saturday to photograph water birds. The weather may change our minds as rain is expected this weekend. 25 November 2006: Tom's singing "On the road again, I can't wait to get on the road again ... " And Tom should not sing, ever! But, he's excited about moving on south to warmer weather. We're preparing our "rig" to pull-out on Monday morning. We'll drive for three days pulling into overnight stops until we reach Charleston, SC, where we will stop for three days for R&R. We plan to visit Old Town Charleston and take a day to photograph critters at the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. 16 November 2006: Harry Cat took me for a walk the other day on a sunny, warm afternoon. I followed him along the safe side of the huge pine trees in the neighbors' yard. The "safe side" is away from the road. The pine scent smelled like Christmas. Harry meowed some stories to me along the way. At one point, he stopped and went into the pine trees. Meow, meow, meow. Something important is here. I looked and there was a drain ditch or culvert that goes under the road to the other side. Ah ha. So this is where he is doing his hunting and where he found the rat that he brought to us and left by the trash can the other day. He also meowed to me that the pine needles make a good nesting place and a soft, scented litter box. He reminded me that he knows how important it is to stay on the safe side of the pine trees and to play nice with Speedy, the neighbors' young cat. When we got to the end of the line, he rolled around and turned around and said, "Now, follow me back home." We're going to visit Tom's folks in WV this weekend and we'll stay off of the crowded highways during Thanksgiving week. Our estimated time of departure is now 27 November. 09 November 2006: We're still in VA caring for my parents. We plan to head south on 20 November before Ol' Man Winter comes this way. Over the weekend we gathered at the Olsen Farm-Orchard in Shenandoah VA. I had great fun playing with Tyler Jean Jane and Kendall Rose, my two great-nieces. I also had a few moments to visit with my niece Melanie and nephew Buzzy. Tom's brother Bob and Michelle came to visit us, too. You may view some of our photos in my new gallery. I made Snapbooks at Shutterfly for a few relatives. Tuesday, 08 November, was Election Day. The Democrats now rule the House of Representatives and lead in the Senate by two members. President Bush has lost much of his political backing in Congress. The times they are a'changin'. Let's bring our soldiers home, give our children back their recess, and teach our adolescents job skills through vocational education! |
