Barksdale Air Force Base is located in Bossier City, Louisiana in the northwest corner of the state. Barksdale is home to the mighty 8th Air Force, the Air Force Global Strike Command and the 2nd Bomb Wing. Just inside the north gate of the base lies a gem that many aviation and history enthusiasts are unaware of, the Barksdale Global Power Museum.
The museum building features six different exhibit galleries, an aviation art collection, and an exclusive 911 display highlighting the role Barksdale played on that fateful day. Outside, are acres of static aircraft displays featuring aircraft from the late 1930’s to todays’ B-52 Stratofortress.
Notable exhibits include a B-17 Flying Fortress, B-47 Stratojet, B-29 Superfortress, P-51D Mustang, B-24 Liberator, SR-71 Blackbird, MIG-21 Fishbed, British Avro Vulcan, as well as two versions of the B-52 Stratofortress. A total of twenty aircraft are in the museum’s collection and on display.
The museum is minutes away from Interstate 20, making it a relatively quick and easy stop for anyone traveling through the area. The museum is open year-round except Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Day. Hours of operation are 9:00am the 4:30pm and a gift shop is located inside the museum building. Admission is free.
